Example posters are below. In general, these are for a slightly different purpose, but they are useful for ideas nonetheless. Powerpoint works well enough for poster design, but feel free to use another tool to develop the vector graphics if you'd like.
For most of your posters, you'll probably want more refs. And don't be afraid to use figures to get your point across (in places where the information is better conveyed with an image that can be explained)
